BARBARA BOYES, BCAc
Barbara, of Ireby, has been a true pillar of her community for over 50 years as a school governor, a church warden and through supporting the local village hall, Globe Hall. Since moving to Ireby, Barbara has devoted her time and energy in supporting the local community, especially the Globe Hall, which belongs to the residents of Ireby parish and is widely used within the community, including by the local school and church, as neither has a hall.
Barbara has quietly and efficiently looked after Globe Hall for over 30 years. Her role included managing bookings, payments, preparing the hall, cleaning and maintenance, managing supplies and equipment, and holding the role of treasurer. As well as performing the day-to-day tasks associated with keeping the village hall open, Barbara has been a constant source of inspiration for fundraising and improvements.
In 2000, a major refurbishment was needed, and Barbara supported a local businessman who had obtained a Lottery Grant for the refurbishment work to be carried out. Barbara identified all the changes and improvements the hall needed, and through contacting local businesses was able to source the new kitchen equipment and furniture, which is still used to this day.
During her long period running the village hall, Barbara overcame the challenge of a diminishing management committee by taking on many of the additional roles herself. It was only after Barbara had to stand down for health reasons, that the extent of her commitment was recognised – an entire new committee has been selected to fulfil the duties that Barbara did single-handedly for so long.
