SABA NASIM, BCAv
Saba is an inspirational solicitor from Essex who has encouraged more than 1,000 girls to try out cricket over the past eight years – changing many lives in the process. She joined Wanstead Cricket Club in 2009, and soon established the first girls-only cricket project in Redbridge and East London. She had a vision to make sport, particularly cricket, more accessible to girls in her community and to increase Asian female representation.
Being an Asian Muslim, Saba has been an inspiration and role model to the young girls she has coached. She makes her sessions as inclusive as possible, planning them around prayer times and religious festivals so everyone can join in, no matter what their faith.
She uses cricket to empower girls from a wide range of backgrounds who would often be overlooked.Sheactively encourages social cohesion, building confidence and leadership skills in the process. She encourages even shy girls who would normally be unwilling to participate in any sports to give her sessions at least one go. The girls’ team she coaches at the Redbridge project have gone on to win nine national Chance to Shine Street Tournaments since 2013.
