AMANDA CONNOR BCAb
Amanda is a Community Champion at Tesco where she has worked for over 16 years, and is passionate about her community of Kidderminster. When the Community Champion role was created within Tesco Amanda threw herself into making a difference in her community.
A local charity for Alzheimer’s approached Amanda, and visited the store, along with one of their members. Amanda noted how difficult shopping could be for anyone suffering with dementia. Liaising with Tesco and Jo Hughes for the charity Alzheimer’s UK Amanda set up the ‘Relaxed Aisle Checkout’.
This aisle is set up for those suffering from Dementia, at the checkout there are images of coins and notes clearly marked, and all colleagues who man the aisle are dementia friends trained. This has been a huge success in Kidderminster, all due to Amanda’s clear direction of the need for such a service.
Amanda also supports Tesco’s Community Food Connection which supplies surplus food from every Tesco store each evening to local organisations. In Kidderminster the charities which they support include a night-café which feeds the homeless. Through the community engagement that Amanda promotes, it has become evident how integral volunteers are, without them, many of the charities and causes that are helped by Tesco would not exist.
