Barbara Williams BCAc
Barbara started one of the first playgroups in the country in the early 1970’s and today works as a youth leader within the local church. Now retired, she continues to dedicate even more of her life to helping others.
Much of the volunteering Barbara undertakes is at St Mary’s Church in Liscard, adjacent to the local community primary school. Liscard Primary has an above average number of children on free school meals with many of the children and their families coming to the church after school club and toddler clubs. There is poverty in the area and many families are struggling to feed their families, particularly in the school holidays. Barbara applied to The Garfield Weston Foundation for a grant and used the funds to put in a high spec kitchen in the church. She then created an after-school club serving the local community ensuring that the children got one hot meal a day.
Barbara applied for funding to cover school holidays and worked with 5 other local churches providing hot meals for everyone during the school six weeks’ holidays. They formed a group working together to provide a kid’s shoe exchange as well as school uniform exchange, food parcels and childcare advice and support.
