CLIVE HORTON-STEPHENS, BCAc
Clive has served on the Cheriton Fitzpaine Parish Hall committee for many years and took on the role of unofficial site manager when the plans were finalised to link the building with an adjacent empty BT building.
Clive assembled a group of local tradesmen who offered reduced rates or free labour, he cajoled a local architectural designer to draw up plans and pulled together a group of volunteers to help with the labour.
He liaised endlessly with the local planning authority to ensure that there were no costly mistakes, and all because he wanted the village to have a safe, bright space where the community could congregate and enjoy events and where people would have a focal point for meeting. The rejuvenated hall is now larger than before, is fully insulated, has matching windows, level floors, is totally accessible to wheelchair users, has a designated Committee Room, an up-to-date fire alarm with emergency system, an hygienic kitchen with commercial catering equipment and a car park – all of which is attributed to Clive’s tenacity, determination and consistent can-do attitude.
The Hall is nearing completion now with just a few finishing touches required. It is because of Clive that this mid-Devon village now has a Village Hall to be proud of once again.
