Douglas has been a committed volunteer for 36 years. Since 1982 he has been committed to the Royal Life Saving Society UK, teaching lifesaving skills and was made an honorary life member in September 2017.

Douglas has also been heavily involved with the Samaritans by manning Samaritan information stands at the DVLA where he worked for 41 years, talking to office managers about mental health issues and how Samaritans can support staff dealing with such issues on a regular basis. He is a fully trained Samaritans telephone advisor and volunteers at the Swansea Samaritans branch where he helps vulnerable groups of people and supports those in crisis.

Douglas is the Press Officer with the League of Friends at Morriston hospital and has served the league for many years.  This year the League celebrates its 75th anniversary.  Over the years Douglas has been part of a team that has raised £2,100,000, money used for the benefit of patients and hospital staff.

During his annual leave from his full-time job, Douglas will also volunteer for the Royal British Legion, Swimathon UK and Prostate Cancer UK, raising thousands of pounds each year. Despite recent serious health issues, he continued to commit to voluntary work in the community on a weekly basis.
