At the age of 8, Laura (now 18) was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a chronic lifelong autoimmune condition, which is extremely difficult to manage, particularly in a child. Laura became involved with JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) shortly after diagnosis. Through the charity, Laura was a pioneer for testing the Medtronic 670G self-adjusting insulin pump, a medical development which promises life-changing outcomes.
Undaunted by the risks, Laura has achieved an enormous amount of benefit from the pump and has worked relentlessly raising awareness of its use. She has combined this message of medical hope with raising overall awareness of what it is like for young people living with the condition.
Laura became an Ambassador for JDRF and regularly fundraises for the charity both on a personal level, raising over £2500 through sponsorship of fun runs and bake sales, but at an organisational level she has been heavily involved in the raising of over £90,000.
