Mike is a volunteer who has been instrumental in the development of an elderly people’s charity in Merseyside, where he is both a trustee and member of the board. In addition to this he is a registered Reflexologist, a Tai Chi instructor, and plays in the band which performs twice a week for the elderly in Sefton. He is persistent, determined, friendly and approachable.

Mike has worked closely with the Alzheimer’s society and a number of older person groups providing Tai Chi sessions which have proved a success.

In addition to the work he does voluntarily for OPERA (Older Persons Enabling Resource & Action), he is active in his own sheltered accommodation group too. He has developed a Residents Group providing Quiz Nights, organising interesting and stimulating day trips, breakfast club and music trips to name a few. All of these activities serve to prevent isolationism among the elderly, generating social interaction and injecting some fun into their lives.

The older people of Sefton, have benefited immensely from the work Mike has done, making a real difference to the quality of life of others. His efforts have reached over 10,000 people in the community.

As a measure of the esteem with which he is held locally, Mike received a certificate from Sefton Council recognising the 15 years’ selfless and caring volunteering with Sefton OPERA.
