RAY MATTHEWS, BCAc
Ray Matthews is a remarkable man who set himself an ambitious challenge to help raise funds for his local school, Newman Special School. The money raised will fund much needed special interactive outdoor equipment enabling the children to progress physically and psychologically to be the best they can be.
The challenge that Ray set himself was to run 75 marathons on 75 consecutive days, starting on his 75th birthday. Ray completed the challenge, running most of the marathons in his home county of Yorkshire, but he also included two in France. The final leg of the final marathon saw Ray finish in the playground of the school where he was greeted by teachers and excited children.
Ray had only taken up running 17 years ago, and in that time he had raised thousands for various charities through running some notable and international marathons which would be gruelling for younger runners and those more physically imposing than Ray. The exact amount raised by the 75 marathons in 75 days is still being calculated but it is well above £30,000 and counting.
