RICK OGDEN, BCAc
Returning to work in Lambeth three years ago, London Fire Brigade Commander, Rick, was struck by the sheer level of gang and knife crime, and thought of a way to proactively reduce the violence and associated outcomes of these actions. As a keen boxer he set about singlehandedly designing, delivering and implementing a boxing project called ‘BOXCLEVER’ at Miguels Boxing Gym, for 16-24 year olds.
This project was designed to assist the most vulnerable young people by increasing their confidence and life-skills through boxing and fitness. BOX CLEVER is a rolling 16-week programme which encompasses far more than boxing and fitness as the course progresses, it builds-in CV writing, nutrition, lifeskills such as signposting for support services and interview techniques with the end goal of sourcing employment for young people as well as increasing confidence and well-being.
Most importantly BOX CLEVER offers a different path to gang life and exposure to violent crime. It now boasts 15 young people per course with a fantastic completion rate. Rick has personally secured all the funding for this project and continues to tirelessly work to ensure its legacy.
