Sharron Macdonald, BCAe

Sharron Macdonald BCAe receiving her Medal from Professor Andrew Graves

Sharron is employed as a Family Support Coordinator based at the local school, which is in a particularly deprived area of Tyne & Wear. The majority of her role involves working with parents and carers affected by domestic abuse, crime & poverty. Sharron constantly challenges the cycle of poverty, offering home visits and transport to and from school when children have not arrived. This is beyond her contractual obligations.

Although employed, Sharron goes above and beyond to provide the local community with the help it needs. This has seen an improvement in attendance, up from 91% to 95.5% which is an enormous uplift given the living conditions of many of the pupils locally. There has also been a marked improvement in attitude and feeling safe and secure in school. Sharron started her role at the school on a part time basis. Due to the huge impact she made, a full time role was created three years ago.

The school has been awarded the ‘Leading Parent Partnership Award’ in 2014 and Sharron led the exemplary application and verification process. Sharron is passionate about improving her community and introduced a sponsored and muchappreciated breakfast club for the children.

One parent commented: ‘Before receiving support from Sharron, I was rarely happy, if my children saw me smile they would ask why I was happy, they always saw me sad and struggling to cope and crying. Now my family laugh and smile’.
